DEVOTION: Le principe de réalité

Ava Seymour, Patrizia Vicinelli, Zuzanna Bartoszek

GDL525, May 23. - June 22. 2025

Bodies and homes covered in suffocating surfaces of latex and shagpiles, crusades of children driven by hope or despair hoping the sea would part on their arrival, a child in a cave drawing symbols surrounded by their shadows, fragments of a poem recited in a suburbian theater in the late 80's italian provincia, the ornamental excesses of the design scheme, patterns and decorations, walking over traditions in total ease, informality juxtaposed with satirical exposé of an elaborately fictitious underground, where the force of pattern and decoration absorbs and annuls otherwise 'transgressive' potentials. The word 'Devotion' sounds like an excuse, it lacks in casualty. 'Faith' risks accusations of forged authenticity, posed theatrics or the tastelessness of the neutral language of currency. In DEVOTION: Le principe de réalité oxymoric mes-en-scènes articulate the works and contributions of Ava Seymour, Patrizia Vicinelli and Zuzanna Bartoszek, which alternate presentations of the domestic realms of blue collar weekend rubberists amateur and risque home-snapps, with figures driven in picaresque longings, by passions - pain, griefs, beliefs and doubts gestural representations and emotional, anecdotal historical derives crossing fragments of lyrically libidinally intoxicated poetics. DEVOTION: Le principe de réalité freezes a month-long-stacking of email exchanges, phone calls, readings, conversations and archival investigations. A fast-paced draft of juxtapositions. The presentation includes two paintings by Zuzanna Bartsoszek Children Crusade (After Wojtkiewicz) and Drawing, prints from the series Rubber Love, that artist Ava Seymour nomadically produced in Amsterdam, Berlin, Auckland and New York between 1994 and 1996 and a fragment of Non Sempre Ricordano, a four parts epic poem by Patrizia Vicinelli filmed and introduced by an extract of La Notte e Il Giorno, a film by Gianni Castagnoli, collaboratively conceived as a portrait of the artist and poet.
